Mental Health Yoga in Kidbrooke / Eltham
What is Somatic Yoga?
This relatively new style of yoga blends the insights of modern Western neuroscience with the ancient wisdom of Eastern traditions. Its primary focus is on regulating the nervous system, allowing individuals to navigate the challenges of daily life with greater balance and ease. The classes are intentionally slow-paced but not still. Could be described as moving yin yoga. The participants are guided through simple poses while being encouraged to listen to their bodies and let their sensations lead the way. In this approach, the teacher acts as a facilitator, helping to shape a practice that is unique to each individual.Physically, the practice alleviates tension and discomfort while enhancing breath awareness. Mentally, it offers a deeply meditative and introspective experience, supporting the processing of difficult emotions and helping to gain clarity in various situations. With its gentle nature, this practice is accessible to individuals of all skill and fitness levels. The class is Tuesdays at noon in a small studio between Kidbrooke and Eltham (15 minutes walk from both). The group is limited to 8 people.
My yoga journey
Yoga has been a part of my life for over 20 years, and it has become a vital daily practice in recent years. To be absolutely honest, I am probably not the most strong or flexible yogi you will ever meet. However, in the past few years, I've become an expert in using yoga and dance as healing tools for my own mental health. I am very sensitive to my body's signals and have become skilled at fixing aches in my body and soul. I am also a very creative person when it comes to movement. As a dancer, I'm used to improvising, and often surprise even myself with the weird ideas that suddenly pop into my head or the cool things my body can do. As a yoga teacher—or rather a facilitator—I aim to hold space for you to understand your own body's signals and discover your own creativity. To deepen my understanding and gain formal knowledge to back up my instincts, I trained as a somatic yoga teacher in sunny Tenerife under the guidance of the incredible Mili Gentile. I’ve just completed another Yoga Alliance-certified course with Jessica Flemming called Mental Health Aware & Trauma-Informed Yoga—and I’m excited to continue my education in this field.I’m truly excited to share this journey with you, offering a holistic approach to mental and physical well-being, and guiding you to explore and heal your own minds and bodies.
Class guidelines
🙏 Let's keep verbal conversation to a minimum during class—if you need assistance, just give a little wave.🙏 To help maintain a calm atmosphere, let's keep our voices soft, even before and after class.🙏 However, you're more than welcome to make natural body sounds like sighing or yawning.🙏 If you arrive late, please join in quietly.🙏 If you need to faff around with something (like taking a sip of water or removing a layer), doing it slowly and mindfully can help minimize distractions for you and everyone.🙏 Enjoy and be yourself! Always honour your body and do not do anything that feels painful or uncomfortable. No need to people please!
What to bring?
- Loose, comfy clothes in many layers (the studio can get a little chilly)- Water or tea, preferably in a plastic bottle so that it doesn’t make a noise if pushed over.- A blindfold for a more immersive experience- Your open self 🙂
